Every instrument that touches a patient’s mouth goes through a multi-step sterilization process before it is ever reused. We clean, disinfect, and then sterilize our tools using hospital-grade autoclaves that use pressurized steam to eliminate bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens.
We also monitor our sterilization equipment regularly through biological indicator testing, which confirms that our autoclaves are reaching the temperatures and pressure levels needed to fully sterilize instruments. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, standard precautions in dental settings form the foundation of preventing the spread of infectious agents during patient care, and we treat these recommendations as the minimum, not the maximum, of what we do.
Our team wears appropriate personal protective equipment for every procedure, including gloves, masks, and protective eyewear, and we change gloves between each patient without exception. We also use disposable barriers on surfaces like dental chairs, light handles, and countertops, replacing them after every visit so that nothing is reused between patients.
Single-use items, such as needles, suction tips, and certain polishing tools, are disposed of immediately after use in puncture-resistant containers and are never reprocessed. This approach removes any risk of cross-contamination from disposable materials and keeps our treatment rooms consistently clean from one patient to the next.
Between each appointment, our team thoroughly disinfects every surface in the treatment room, from the dental chair and bracket tray to light switches, drawer handles, and countertops. We use EPA-registered disinfectants that are proven effective against a broad range of bacteria and viruses, and we allow the recommended contact time for each product to work before a room is considered ready for the next patient.
This process is not left to chance or memory. Our team follows a standardized checklist for every operatory turnover, which means the same thorough cleaning happens whether you are the first patient of the day or the last.
Many patients do not realize that dental unit waterlines require their own dedicated maintenance to prevent bacterial buildup inside the equipment itself. We test and treat our waterlines on a consistent schedule to keep the water used during treatment, such as for rinsing or cooling handpieces, safe and clean.
We also keep our technology and equipment well maintained, which supports both patient comfort and infection control. Tools like our CEREC same-day crown system and digital imaging equipment are cleaned and maintained according to manufacturer guidelines, in addition to our standard disinfection protocols.
Sterilization and infection control are not one-time training topics for our team.
