We Are Now Offering Enhanced Oral Cancer Screenings!

Dr. Dang takes a stand against oral cancer using OralID™ Fluorescence Technology.

Beechnut Dental Care joined forces with Forward Science, the manufacturer of OralID™, and became a provider of the ID For Life™ Program to promote early detection and public awareness of oral cancer in the office. Dr. Dang will be offering enhanced oral cancer screenings during scheduled appointments to new and current patients.

Dr Dang uses an oral cancer screening device, OralID, in efforts to discover oral cancers in their earliest stages. Currently, 70% of oral cancers are found in late stages (stage III, IV), resulting in a 5-year survival rate around 60%. Finding these abnormalities in much earlier stages can increase the 5-year survival rate up to 80-90%.

What to Expect During an Oral Cancer Screening With OralID

During an oral cancer screening, your dentist will look inside your mouth for any signs of abnormal lesions or sores. They will also feel around your gums, cheeks, and roof of your mouth for any lumps or irregular patches.

What sets an OralID oral cancer examination apart from a traditional screening is the addition of “fluorescence technology.” During your appointment, your dentist will use a specialized blue light to better visualize any cancer or pre-cancer abnormalities. This new device allows dentists to see issues they might have missed using traditional screening methods.

Oral cancer screenings do not require extra preparation and are typically performed during routine dental check-ups. If you notice any changes to the inside of your mouth or have any questions about your oral screening options, please contact us today to schedule an examination to catch any issues before they become more serious problems.

What Happens After an Oral Cancer Screening?

If your dentist finds abnormalities during your oral cancer screening, they will either schedule you for a follow-up examination to see if there are any changes or if the sore has healed after a week, or they might refer you to a specialist for further examination and treatment. Your specialist will likely perform one of two tests to determine an official diagnosis: cytology or biopsy.

  • Cytology: This is the less invasive of the two tests. Your healthcare provider will scrape off cells from the suspicious patch or sore to be examined by a pathologist.
  • Biopsy: In a biopsy, your healthcare provider will remove a portion of the abnormal area to be examined by a pathologist. As more tissue is removed in a biopsy, it is considered the more invasive of the two procedures.

Your dentists should be able to provide the results of your oral cancer screening immediately after the examination. However, if you are referred to a specialist for further diagnosis, it typically takes three to five days to receive the results of your cytology or biopsy testing.

Why Regular Oral Cancer Screenings Are Crucial for Your Health

While there is no cut-and-dry cause for developing oral cancer, research shows that there are a number of factors that may increase your risk. These risk factors include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Heavy alcohol use
  • Excessive sun exposure to the lips
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Weakened immune system
  • Age (those over 40 are at increased risk)
  • Gender (men are more at risk than women)

Even though a large percentage of people diagnosed with oral cancer have one of these risk factors, it is still important you get regular screenings as anyone can develop cancer regardless of their health. Speaking with your dentist about your risk factors and how you can take steps to reduce these factors is vital in maintaining your health and quality of life.

The number one benefit of getting regular oral cancer screenings is early detection. When cancer is found early, it is often at a lower stage, and the chances for successful treatment are higher. Because oral cancer mortality rates are so high, early detection can reduce your risk of death by detecting suspicious legions before they become cancerous. This early detection can also catch oral cancer before it has the opportunity to metastasize or spread to other parts of the body as it progresses and becomes more damaging.

Frequently Asked Questions About Oral Cancer Screening

Why are oral cancer screenings important?

Oral cancer screenings are crucial because:

  • Early detection dramatically improves survival rates (up to 90% when caught early)
  • Oral cancer often develops without pain or obvious symptoms
  • Regular screenings can identify precancerous conditions before they develop into cancer
  • The death rate for oral cancer is higher than many other cancers due to late detection
  • Risk factors like tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and HPV infection are increasingly common
How often should I get an oral cancer screening?

Most dental professionals recommend:

  • Annual screenings for adults with no risk factors
  • Bi-annual screenings (every 6 months) for those with risk factors
  • More frequent screenings for those who have previously had oral cancer
  • Screenings during your regular dental check-ups
  • Additional screenings if you notice any unusual changes in your mouth
Who should get oral cancer screenings?

Everyone should receive regular oral cancer screenings, but they’re particularly important for people with risk factors:

  • Tobacco users (cigarettes, cigars, pipes, smokeless tobacco)
  • Heavy alcohol consumers
  • Previous oral cancer diagnosis
  • HPV infection history
  • Excessive sun exposure (for lip cancer)
  • Age over 40
  • Family history of cancer
  • Poor nutrition or weakened immune system
Are there different types of oral cancer screening technologies?

Yes, Beechnut Dental Care employs advanced screening technologies including:

  • Digital imaging systems for enhanced visualization
  • OralID technology that makes abnormal tissues more visible
  • Comprehensive digital record-keeping for tracking changes over time

Remember that not all suspicious findings indicate cancer—many turn out to be harmless abnormalities. Beechnut Dental Care’s thorough approach ensures that any concerns are properly addressed with the appropriate level of care.

Does dental insurance cover oral cancer screenings?

Basic visual and tactile oral cancer screenings are typically included in routine dental examinations, which are usually covered by dental insurance. However, coverage for advanced screening technologies varies:

  • Some plans cover advanced screenings at 100%
  • Others require a copay or coinsurance
  • Some consider advanced screening techniques “experimental”

Check with your insurance provider for specific coverage details.

Can oral cancer be prevented?

While not all oral cancers can be prevented, you can significantly reduce your risk by:

  • Avoiding all tobacco products
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Using lip balm with SPF protection
  • Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables
  • Getting vaccinated against HPV
  • Practicing good oral hygiene
  • Limiting exposure to environmental toxins
  • Attending regular dental check-ups with screenings
What are the warning signs of oral cancer I should watch for between screenings?

Between professional screenings, be alert for:

  • Sores in the mouth that don’t heal within two weeks
  • Persistent pain or tenderness in any area
  • White or red patches on the gums, tongue, tonsils, or mouth lining
  • Feeling like something is caught in your throat
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving your tongue/jaw
  • Numbness in any area of the mouth
  • Swelling that changes the fit of dentures
  • Persistent bad breath despite good hygiene

Contact your dentist immediately if you notice any of these symptoms.

What is the survival rate for oral cancer?

Survival rates for oral cancer depend heavily on when it’s detected:

  • Early-stage oral cancer: approximately 80-90% five-year survival rate
  • Late-stage oral cancer: approximately 20-30% five-year survival rate

This dramatic difference highlights why regular screening is so crucial—early detection literally saves lives.

What is Cleaning and Prevention in Dentistry?

A preventive program is a cooperative effort by the patient, dentist, and dental staff to preserve the natural dentition and supporting structures by preventing the onset, progress, and recurrence of dental diseases and conditions.

Preventing dental disease starts at home with good oral hygiene and a balanced diet.  It is continued in the dental office by the efforts of your dentist and dental hygienist to promote, restore, and maintain your oral health.

Prevention also includes regular dental exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Sealants and fluoride are also great preventive treatments that help protect the teeth.

What are Preventative Treatments?

Our team offers several options for preventative care that range from screenings to professional cleanings:

Dental Exams

A comprehensive dental exam will be performed by your dentist at your initial dental visit.  At regular check-up exams, your dentist and hygienist will include the following:

  • Examination of diagnostic x-rays (radiographs): Essential for detection of decay, tumors, cysts, and bone loss.  X-rays also help determine tooth and root positions.
  • Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
  • Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
  • Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces will be checked for decay with special dental instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.

What Are Common Dental Emergencies?

Lost Filling or Crown

Professional dental cleanings (dental prophylaxis) are usually performed by Registered Dental Hygienists.  Your cleaning appointment will include a dental exam and the following:

  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that has been left on the tooth for some time and is now firmly attached to the tooth surface.  Calculus forms above and below the gum line and can only be removed with special dental instruments.
  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums.  This inflammation is the start of periodontal disease!
  • Teeth polishing: Remove stains and plaque that are not otherwise removed during tooth brushing and scaling.

Oral Cancer Exam

When oral cancer is diagnosed in its earliest stages, treatment is generally very effective.  Any noticeable abnormalities in the tongue, gums, mouth or surrounding area should be evaluated by a health professional as quickly as possible.  During the oral cancer exam, the dentist and dental hygienist will be scrutinizing the maxillofacial and oral regions carefully for signs of pathologic changes.

The following signs will be investigated during a routine oral cancer exam:

  • Red patches and sores – Red patches on the floor of the mouth, the front and sides of the tongue, white or pink patches which fail to heal, and slow healing sores that bleed easily can be indicative of pathologic (cancerous) changes.
  • Leukoplakia – This is a hardened white or gray, a slightly raised lesion that can appear anywhere inside the mouth. Leukoplakia can be cancerous or may become cancerous if treatment is not sought.
  • Lumps – Soreness, lumps, or the general thickening of tissue anywhere in the throat or mouth can signal pathological problems.

Dental x-rays are essential, preventative, diagnostic tools that provide valuable information not visible during a regular dental exam.  Dentists and dental hygienists use this information to safely and accurately detect hidden dental abnormalities and complete an accurate treatment plan.  Without x-rays, problem areas may go undetected.

  • Abscesses or cysts.
  • Bone loss.
  • Cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.
  • Decay between the teeth.
  • Developmental abnormalities.
  • Poor tooth and root positions.
  • Problems inside a tooth or below the gum line.

Advantages of Cleanings and Preventative Dental Care

  • Protect your teeth from damage
  • Improve your dental health
  • Early detection of dental issues

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Emergencies

What qualifies as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any oral health situation requiring immediate treatment (within 24 hours). This includes severe dental pain, profuse bleeding, knocked-out teeth, loose adult teeth, cracked teeth, lost crowns or fillings causing pain, and dental infections. Without prompt treatment, these conditions typically worsen and can lead to more serious complications.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

If your tooth is knocked out (avulsed):

  • Call your dentist immediately
  • Pick up the tooth by the crown (top) only—never touch the root
  • Gently rinse it under warm water without scrubbing
  • Try to place it back in its socket if possible
  • If reinsertion isn’t possible, store it in milk, saliva, or water (last resort)
  • See a dentist within one hour for the best chance of saving the tooth
How do I manage severe tooth pain until I can see a dentist?

To manage severe tooth pain temporarily:

  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen) as directed
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off)
  • Rinse with warm salt water to reduce inflammation
  • Use clove oil on a cotton ball applied to the painful area
  • Avoid hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages that may trigger pain
How should I handle a cracked or broken tooth?

For a cracked or broken tooth:

  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to clean the area
  • Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  • Take over-the-counter pain relievers if needed
  • Cover any sharp edges with dental wax or sugar-free gum to protect your tongue and cheeks
  • Schedule an emergency dental appointment immediately
  • Collect any broken pieces and bring them to your appointment
How do I know if my lost filling or crown is an emergency?

A lost filling or crown becomes an emergency when it causes significant pain, sharp edges that damage soft tissues, or exposes a nerve. Temporary solutions include using dental cement from a pharmacy to reattach a crown or placing sugar-free gum in the cavity. See your dentist within 1-2 days to prevent further damage to the tooth.

Can a dental emergency be life-threatening?

Yes, untreated dental infections can become life-threatening if infection spreads to surrounding tissues, sinuses, or bloodstream. Warning signs of a serious infection include facial swelling, difficulty breathing or swallowing, fever, severe pain, and swollen lymph nodes. These symptoms require immediate emergency care as they can lead to sepsis or airway obstruction.

What should be in my dental emergency kit?

A home dental emergency kit should include:

  • Your dentist’s emergency contact information
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers (acetaminophen or ibuprofen)
  • Gauze pads for bleeding control
  • Small container with lid (for storing knocked-out teeth or dental pieces)
  • Dental cement or temporary filling material
  • Dental wax for covering sharp edges
  • Cold compress (or instant cold pack)
  • Salt packets for making salt water rinses
