A dental implant is a prosthetic device that mimics the appearance and role of a natural tooth. Dental implants have three components:
Post: A screw-like post that is burrowed into the jawbone to simulate the function of a tooth root. The post stimulates the bone to prevent it from eroding and provides a stabilizing element for the rest of the implant. Abutment: The abutment rests atop the post and just below the gumline. This element is used to keep the dental crown that tops the implant in place.
Crown: The dental crown is the only visible component of a dental implant. Crowns are hollow appliance that look just like real teeth and are held in place by the abutment.
Most people make good candidates for dental implants but it’s important to keep in mind that they do require a minor oral surgery to implement. So long as you do not have any health restrictions that would prevent you from undergoing this type of procedure and have a healthy amount of jawbone to sustain the implant, you should be able to enjoy the benefits.
